Painting From an Old Photo


This one started as a gift to someone. The first surprise was using the wrong picture of the same person. They had actually spoke of this photo that portrayed their grandmother when she was younger, much younger. Now they have two. :-)



Beginning with the face so that it is centered. 


Paint sketching in some areas for the shadows 


That's some big hair, maybe a little too much. 


Haircut and more shading 


Started working in the background before it get too far. 



Building up layers of color.



This photo is a little dark but the shadows are shown better with it that way.


Since I was working from a black and white photo, the colors were anyone's choice. The yellow didn't look right so I changed it to the purple instead. The eye and hair color I remembered from meeting this person so those had to match.

I did play around with the background colors and the canvas orientation using chalk.
